De Niro and Stone both shine in their performances as well, displaying the strengths and weaknesses of their characters as they alternately sabotage, befriend, seduce, and betray each other. Their performances give the film its energy and, at times, its direction. It’s a shame that real-life mobster casinos don’t operate the way Casino portrays them. But that may change as the mob gives way to real estate developers and hotel chains with deeper pockets than their Mafia counterparts.
