Poker is a card game in which players wager money against each other for the chance to win a hand of cards. There are various forms of the game and the rules vary, but all involve betting rounds and a showdown in which the highest-ranking poker hand wins the pot.
How to Play Poker: Basics
In most poker games each player receives one facedown card and one faceup card, called a hole card. There is then a first betting interval in which each player may bet, call or fold.
After the first betting interval, the dealer deals three face-up cards on the board that anyone can use. This is called the flop.
During the next betting round, which is called the turn, each player can bet, raise or fold. The dealer then deals a fourth card on the board that anyone can use.
Position Is Important in Poker:
If you have a pocket pair of Kings or Queens, or an Ace-King or Ace-Queen combination, bet aggressively from the get-go! This will give other players a reason to fold or to make a lower bet if they think you are bluffing.
